I love this from Rembrandt, from Daniel 5: 1–5, 25–28 and entitled, Belshazzar's Feast.
Belshazzar was the king of Babylon. His father had robbed the Temple of Jerusalem of all its sacred vessels. Using these to serve food at a feast, as Belshazzar does here, was seen as sacrilege.
In the middle of the party, thunder came as a warning. God’s hand appeared from a cloud and wrote in Hebrew:
“Mene, Mene, Tekel Upharsin”
“You have been weighed in the
balance and found wanting”
The Handwriting was on the Wall!…
Today, “the handwriting on the wall” is used to describe situations where there are obvious signs that something bad is about to happen. It highlights the idea of being aware of the warnings signs and understanding the potential consequences!
