Christmas Hymns with Bible Verses - part 1

“Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”

Is one of the most beloved Christmas hymns of all time. The lyrics were written by Charles Wesley in 1739, while the music was composed by Felix Mendelssohn in 1840.

  • I’m providing Scripture to cite each of his lines. My focus is to draw out the biblical meanings to help you make the Biblical connect!.

Let’s look at a few stanzas of this beautiful carol: If I were to ask you what the true meaning of Jesus’ birth was and how to sum up the Christian faith, what would you say?

Well, Charles Wesley exclaims it for us in the opening stanza of his song

“Hark! The herald angels sing,

"Glory to the newborn King,

“Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!"

Through Christ, God and sinners are reconciled; sinners become saints in His eyes, and then He leads them to bring reconciliation with others (2 Cor. 5:18-21).

The worst problem of all for humanity – by far – is that people are alienated from God. And when they’re alienated from God, one way or another, they’re alienated from one another.

No wonder the angels of heaven were sent to earth to rejoice and let men know

(Luke 2:1-14)!

Accordingly, Wesley responds,

“Joyful, all ye nations rise, join the triumph of the skies; with angelic host proclaim,

"Christ is born in Bethlehem!" (Rev. 21:24; Haggai 2:6-7; Mt. 1:4-6; Micah 5:2).

“Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"

“Christ, by highest heaven adored; Christ, the everlasting Lord (Rev. 5:13; Heb. 1:6; Rev. 22:13).

“Late in time behold him come, offspring of a virgin's womb! (Mt. 1:18-23).

“Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;

“Hail the incarnate Deity (Heb. 10:20),

“Pleased as Man with men to dwell (John 1:14),

“Jesus, our Emmanuel (Mt. 1:23).

“Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"

“Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace (Is. 9:6)!

“Hail the Sun of Righteousness!

“Light and life to all he brings (John 8:12; 11:25-26),

“Risen with healing in his wings (drug addicts, alcoholics, broken marriages, broken lives & the list goes on: Luke 4:18-19).

“Mild he lays his glory by (Phil. 2:6-7),

“Born that we no more may die (John 11:25-26),

“Born to raise us from the earth, born to give us second birth.

“Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"
